All About Spring Sessions!

The long-awaited spring after a cold and gray winter is here! But here in KC, it feels like it takes forever!! Shouldn’t there be flowers in March? I think so, but the foliage doesn’t agree… This blog post will help you plan the best date for your desired spring look with location info, photo examples, and all my tips from photographing seniors for 8+ years! Let’s get into it!

Late March

These sessions took place towards the very end of March! The majority of trees are still completely bare, with a few white flowering trees (the BEST at the very end of March) and the start of some trees, mostly at Nelson in my experience! Grass has greened up but fields are incredibly short or non-existent or very dry looking (orange/fall feel) Sessions are still very much do-able in March but they don’t have that true spring feel. If you aren’t worried about that or plan on doing a city location, March is a great time to book :)

Beginning of April

These sessions took place the first + second week of April! Most trees are still bare, with more flowering trees! If you want a flowering tree, these are best the very first week of April! Stuff is starting to green up (especially some trees at Nelson Atkins!) Some fields are still drier-looking (the orange grassy look) but you can achieve a field feel with green grass!

Late April

These sessions took place the last week of April! By this point, most trees have greened up (only a few sparse spots but I know where to go to get you that green feel!), and the fields are green (shorter fields, no flowers minus a few yellow wildflower weeds in some spots). Late April is the BEST time to schedule your session if you want a true spring feel with lots of greenery, and still have time to get your entire gallery back if your grad party is later in May! (Please note that I always send a next-day sneak peek the day after your session, so you will always have a few photos to use for grad announcements, parties, etc!)

Mid-May

May is very similiar to late April sessions, with all trees back to their wonderful full green! If roses are your vibe, this is the earliest month of the year to get the rose garden at Loose Park! These images below are from late May of 2022, and roses are usually in bloom starting mid-May!

Pro Tips!

Here are some of my very best tips to have the BEST spring photoshoot!

Nelson Atkins is one of the BEST spring locations!

Nelson Atkins is one of the best locations for your spring session. The beautiful archetypes and spring trees offer so much variety, and in my experience, the trees green up the quickest out of the rest of my locations. It’s an awesome spot at any point during the spring, plus, it’s a great spot for a true KC vibe and nature look! You cannot go wrong with this location :)

Bring a flower bouquet!

Since the rose garden at Loose Park doesn’t start blooming until May, which is likely too late for my 2025 grads, bringing your own bouquet of flowers is the BEST way to incorporate a pop of color and guarantee you can have a flower look in your photos! One of my favorite tricks is placing the flowers around you in a grassy field to make it look like you are in flowers, like the photos below! They got to use their flowers as a prop as well as a flower field look! It’s a no-brainer :)

Book a Studio Mini Session!

Don’t want to deal with weather reschedules, want some unique senior portraits, and have a simple photoshoot? My Studio Shorts are the session for you!! These sessions take place at my home studio (which has both white + pink backdrop paper) and will not be affected by the weather! If it rains, no worries, we’re indoors :) It’s also climate-controlled, because well, you never know if it’s going to be 40 degrees in March or not! My Studio Shorts are my most affordable package, and actually come with an extra outfit, due to the nature of the simple backdrop! Oh and if you weren’t already convinced, these sessions can be booked in January and February! They can be booked all spring but are the only sessions offered in January + Feburary! A session that will happen the day you book, photos back quicker, and an extra outfit? Dude say less. (I also have a ton of props, including all the disco balls pictured, that you can use!!!)

Partake in FREE Group Shoots!

I offer FOUR, FREE group shoots to my senior girls and while two have already happened, there are still two to go! If you book your spring senior photoshoot with me, you get to attend the final two events, which are a college tee group shoot in the city in March and a grad party celebration in May! All for free! Extra photos of you, new friendships, and some fun surprises are my way of thanking you for choosing me to capture your senior year. I also might have another surprise up my sleeve as in an extra event. All I’m saying is, you don’t want to miss out :) Here are some photos that my 2024 senior, Mallory, got from the spring events!
